BBC weather presenter Kirsty McCabe shares the challenges of being pregnant on live TV, not to mention having to deliver bad weather news for this Easter weekend!

One of the many strange things about being pregnant is that people think it’s OK to comment on your size, and have no qualms about telling you how big you are.  I’m a fully qualified Met Office aviation forecaster with a decade of national and international TV and radio broadcast experience and I love embracing the challenge of balancing my pregnancy and my career – but sometimes still find it hard not to feel offended by viewer comments. I think pregnant weather girls tend to attract more negative viewer comments than other TV presenters because we stand up to deliver the forecast, often turning sideways when pointing to something on the map (and what with TV adding ten pounds, my bump sometimes seems to appear out of nowhere – goodness only knows what it would be like with 3D TV!); which makes it more obvious when we’re expecting, as opposed to sitting behind a desk to read the news. So should we really be hiding our bumps away the minute we start showing? I don’t think so, as long as we’re fit and healthy and want to work then the viewers will just have to get used to it in my opinion!

The only dilemma I’ve had is what to wear on screen, as you don’t want to be too distracting during the forecast. Luckily I’ve managed to pull together a maternity wardrobe to overcome this challenge.  I tend to wear empire line dresses that flatter the bump but aren’t too clingy and never wear anything too baggy as this will only make you look bigger. I’ve even managed to invest in colourful pieces rather than the usual maternity staple of black, so long as the cut and the style works for your new shape, there’s no need to hide your bump away!  If I feel the bump is ever taking over, then I’ll pop on a loose fitting suit jacket (usually unbuttoned as quite frankly most don’t button up anymore!).  I do receive nice comments, often from other pregnant ladies who like to feel they are going through pregnancy with me – you can keep those ones coming in!

Finding something to wear to a big event can be a challenge - whether or not you have a bump. I’ve worn a couple of the Seraphine Luxe dresses to recent events and felt really glamorous. Even my non-pregnant friends were big fans and I reckon some of the dresses would look just as good post baby. Not that I’m likely to be attending many parties once the baby does arrive…
